This framework presents a new hierarchical model for health education practice at the entry-level, and two advanced-levels. Included are Areas of Responsibility and Competencies for Health Educators, as well as 35 Competencies and 163 Sub-competencies. The document also describes the historical development and evolution of a competency-based model for health education, summarizes the Competencies Update Project (CUP) research leading up to the latest model, and interprets the significance of the changes in the new model.
It is an essential reference for all health education students, faculty, practitioners, employers, policymakers, funding agencies, and any organization that provides workforce development and training for health educators. This companion guide is based on the Health Educator Job Analysis-2010 and includes updated and validated Competencies and Sub-competencies at the entry-and advanced-level. This publication is an excellent resource to assist in studying for the revised CHES examination effective April 2011. Additionally, the publication can be used to assess health education knowledge. Instructors in professional preparation programs may find the format and organization of this book to be a useful supplement to textbooks and classroom lectures. Employers can encourage their employees to use this book as a tool to determine whether additional professional development in specific areas is needed.

This revised framework is based on the Health Educator Job Analysis-2010, a project to update, refine and validate the model of health education practice. The updated model comprises 223 Sub-competencies, organized into 34 Competencies within seven major Areas of Responsibility. Of the Sub-competencies, 61 were validated as advanced-level only. The HEJA-2010 study expanded upon the previous Competency Update Project (CUP) which first provided a model of three levels of practice. This publication is recommended for use in the preparation for the revised CHES exam effective April 2011.
